Parents,

It is never too early to start thinking about paying for your child's college expenses.  The cost of education continues to rise, but there are ways to help defer the cost.  The most important advice is to get smart about Federal Student Aid and to know the financial counselor at the University or College where your child will be attending.

Most student financial aid comes from the federal government.  Applying for federal aid is free so beware of anyone who charges money for scholarships.

Basic Eligibility for Federal Aid

  1. Demonstrate financial need
  2. Be a US citizen
  3. Be working toward a degree
  4. Show that you have applied to a postsecondary school
  5. Complete a high school education
  6. Register with the Selective Service
  7. Maintain academic progress once in school

There are three types of federal student aid:

  1. Grants-financial aid that doesn't have to be repaid
  2. Work-Study-allows you to earn money for your education
  3. Loans- allow you to borrow money for your education. You must repay loans.

To receive any Federal Aid you must complete the FAFSA application.

Go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov. or www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/pubs

To receive a paper copy you may call 1-800-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243)

Prattville High School will host a financial seminar in the month of November to help answer any questions you may have concerning ways to help with college cost.  Please continue to check the PHS website for scholarship information and dates for informational meetings.  We will also use the STI call home to inform you of upcoming events.
