Directions for Create a Virus

 

1.           Draw (or use a computer generated drawing) and color a fictional virus on the sheet of plain white paper.

2.           Label the parts of your virus: head, tail, tail fibers, capsid, and type of nucleic acid

3.           Write a one page story (12-14 font) about your fictional virus. Include:

·         Name your virus according to the disease it causes.

·         List two or more symptoms of the disease (how the virus affects the host organism).

·         Is it curable? If so, how? If not, what are the consequences?

·         You may (optional) also list any fictitious names of people infected with the virus.

·         Methods of transmission, how it attaches, or how fast it spreads.

9.1 Cellular Growth (pgs. 243-247)

 

Ø As cell grow larger, the ratio of surface area to volume decreases,

       making transport and communication difficult and inefficient.

Ø Cells remain small because diffusion over long distances is slow and

inefficient.

Ø As a cell grows its volume (cell contents) increases faster than its

surface area (plasma membrane).

Ø There are 3 stages of the cell cycle.

Ø Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle.

Ø G1 is the growing stage of the cell cycle.

Ø DNA replication or synthesis occurs during the S stage of interphase.

       The DNA is doubled when the chromosome is copied.

Ø A doubled chromosome consists of 2 sister chromatids held together

       by a centromere. The centromere attaches to the spindle fiber during

       mitosis.

Ø G2 stage of the cell cycle is the stage that precedes mitosis and is the

       check point for errors in DNA.

Ø Cytokinesis in plant cells involves formation of a cell plate between the

       two daughter cells.

Ø Prokaryotes divide by binary fission and produce genetically identical

       cells.

 

9.2 Mitosis and Cytokinesis 248-252)

 

Ø During prophase chromosomes coil or condense, the nuclear envelope breaks down, the nucleolus disappear, poles form with centrioles migrating to the poles. Plant cells do not have centrioles.

Ø During metaphase, chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, the equator. Spindle fiber hold the chromosomes in place during this phase. This is the shortest phase of mitosis.

Ø During anaphase, chromosomes pull apart.

Ø During telophase, chromosomes decondense or relax.

Ø The result of mitosis and cytokinesis is two genetically identical daughter cells each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

 

 

    

9.3 Cell Cycle Regulation (pgs. 253-257)

 

Ø The cell cycle is regulated by cyclin proteins (cyclins).

Ø Cyclin dependent kinases (enzymes) begin the various stages of the

     cell cycle and are important in studying causes of cancer.

 

Cancer

Ø Cancer results in fast and uncontrolled growth of cells that crowd out

     normal cells and deprive them of nutrients. Many mutations are

     required for cancer to result.

Ø Cancer cells spend less time in interphase than normal cells.

Ø Quality control checkpoints allow cells to repair damage that may

     have been caused by mutation.

 

Apoptosis

Ø Apoptosis is programmed cell death which occurs in humans in the

     womb during development of the hand and foot.

 

Stem Cells

Ø Stem cells are unspecialized cells that can develop into specialized

     cells under the right conditions.

Ø There are two types of stem cells, embryonic and adult stem cells.

Ø Embryonic stem cells are found in a fertilized egg and are the main

     source of controversy because of ethical concerns regarding there

     removal.

Ø Adult stem cells are found in various tissues in the body and might be

     used to repair the same kind of tissue in which they are found.
